Level 1 Certification: Essentials of Swim Instruction

The SSI Level 1 Swim Teacher program is the First step in the Certified Swim Teacher system and will prepare you to teach beginning swimmers from the ages of 3 through 15. You will have several tools for training to become a certified swim teacher: a Classroom Session with a certified SSI Swim Teacher Instructor, In-Water Training Sessions, Apprenticeship with hands-on training, and the Teacher’s Manual. Each section in the teacher manual includes terms, skills, and descriptions of everything you will see on the In-water teaching slates for every class in the program. For instance – the description of water entries and “Getting Out” will appear in Aquatike I, Preschool I and Beginner I since the skills are introduced in all entry level class.

Level 2 Certification: Advancing Coaching Skills

Level 2 Swim Teacher program is the next step in the certified Swim Teacher system and will prepare you to teach beginning swimmers from the ages of 5 through 17. You will have several tools for training to become a certified Swim Teacher: a Classroom Session with a Certified SSI Swim Teacher Instructor, In-Water Training Sessions, Apprenticeship with hands-on training, and this Teacher’s Manual. Each section includes terms, skills, and descriptions of everything you will see on the In-water teaching slates for every class in the program. Many of the written instructions will seem complicated, but the techniques will be demonstrated during your In-Water Training Sessions so that you are comfortable with teaching the skills.

Certification for Coaching Adults: Tailored Training for Mature Learners

While the mechanics of teaching a swimming stroke to children and adults are basically the same, the psychology involved is often quite different. Many adults are not just enrolling in lessons because they feel it’s time to learn to swim for fun. Instead, they are likely taking lessons to confront a fear of water that has been resident in them for some time. The SSI approach to teaching adults to swim involves floatation aids, breathing aids, vision aids, and propulsion aids to assist in knocking that fear down to a manageable level then building on our comfort through repetition.

Infant Swimming Instruction Course: Cultivating Young Swimmers

Teaching swimmers this young requires an SSI Swim Teacher to have extreme patience and understanding of relaxes and the child’s way of thinking. Learning to teach Baby Swim classes can be very rewarding as you will develop a close relationship with the parents and children. With Baby Swim classes, you act as a guide for these parents as they work on swim skills with their children. These classes require you to be adept in communicating with the parents, as they will come to you first with any questions. After completing this course, you will be certified and qualified to teach Baby Swim classes. 

React Right (CPR & AED): Vital Emergency Skills

By the end of this program you will be able to recognize and respond to emergency situations with first aid including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and you will be able to avoid inappropriate action that could make a victim’s condition worse. Completing the SSI React Right Specialty Program and keeping your training current places you in the center of the ‘Cycle of Life’ — a system of people like you who are trained to begin the process of life saving by recognizing emergency situations, by responding appropriately, and by avoiding unnecessary or inappropriate care. Their actions give victims the help they desperately need in the event of a life-threatening emergency. The “Cycle of Life” would crumble without individuals—such as you—trained in first aid including CPR.
